Afro-Brazilian dance and Capoeira workshops

As part of SUSU’s Culture Festival 2020, Southampton Capoeira Society invites you to the to take part in unique workshops to have a taste of Afro-Brazilian culture.

The classes will take place on the 15th March 2020, from 2-6pm at the University of Southampton. The focus will be on styles of Afro-Brazilian dance and Capoeira (beginners + intermediates) followed by a traditional Capoeira Roda.

The training will be done by two invited teachers: Ricardo Axé and Mestre Claudio, each with more than 20 years of experience in teaching and spreading Afro-Brazilian culture around the world. Mestre Joãozinho from Southampton Capoeira Society (MarAzul) will be hosting the event.


Detailed Schedule

2 pm – Dance of Orixas
3 pm – Capoeira Beginners
4 pm – Coco de roda and Samba
5 pm – Capoeira intermediate / Capoeira Roda

Price

All workshops are FREE for Southampton University Students, otherwise, prices are:
- Other students: £5 per workshop or £15 for everything.
- Non-students: £7 per workshop or £20 for everything.

Capoeira is a great way of developing coordination, fitness, flexibility, rhythm and movement. And it's great fun! Children will warm up with stretches and gentle exercises, learn the basic steps of capoeira like the 'ginga', kicks and defensive movements. They will also practice movements like handstands and cartwheels which are part of the Capoeira game. Classes are suitable for ages 7 and up. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle. Parents please stay during the class. Thursdays 4.30-5.30pm. Venue: Edmund Kell Unitarian Church, Bellevue Road, Southampton SO15 2AY. Price: £8/class or payable per half term at £6.50/class.
