A weekend celebrating Afro-Brazilian culture and dance with workshops, performances, talks, parties, food and music. Come and join us to celebrate the 8th Zum Zum Zum – coming to Southampton for the first time in collaboration with the Southampton University Capoeira Society! There are taster sessions for complete beginners and dance workshops open to all so come and have a go!

***PROGRAMME***

FRIDAY 12th MAY

  • 5-6pm: Talk on ‘Capoeira: Angolan origins and New World inventions in the making of an Afro-Brazilian martial art’ by Professor Matthias Röhrig Assunção, University of Essex.
    • Details: Matthias Assunção is a Professor at the Department of History and the Centre for Latin American Studies, University of Essex. He authored a book on ‘Capoeira: The History of an Afro-Brazilian Martial Art’ and his current research focuses on the development of combat games in the ‘Black Atlantic’ and how it relates to the construction of masculinity in popular culture.
    • Venue: Building 35, Room 1001, Highfield Campus, SO17 1BJ.
    • Price: FREE, donations to our social project supporting children in Mozambique are welcome.
  • 6-9pm: Capoeira performance – Welcome Roda
    • A unique opportunity to see some of the best capoeira players from Brazil and across Europe coming together for a breathtaking performance of acrobatic skill and cunning set to music in a traditional capoeira ‘roda’.
    • Venue: Concourse (entrance hall) at Union Southampton, Highfield Campus, SO17 1BJ.
    • Price: FREE to watch, donations to our social project supporting children in Mozambique are welcome. £10 for participants.
  • 9pm-12am: Party and traditional Afro-Brazilian food (mocqueca de peixe, a fish stew with coconut milk) and music
    • Venue: The Stile, University Road.
    • Price: Free entry. Food £7.50.

SATURDAY 13TH MAY

  • 10am-6pm: Capoeira, music and dance workshops. Full programme below, workshops include:
    • 10-11am: Maracatú dance workshop – all welcome.
    • 10-11am: Children’s capoeira class.
    • 11am-12pm: CAPOEIRA FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS – all welcome.
    • 3-4pm: Côco dance workshop – all welcome.
    • Venue: Union Southampton (various rooms: Old Sports Hall, Multipurpose Studio and Meeting Room 2), Highfield Campus, SO17 1BJ.
    • Individual workshop price: Southampton Uni students £5; non-students £10; £45 whole day.
  • 8pm-2am: Afro-Brazilian party
    • Includes Forró class – a partner dance ‘for all’, the Brazilian answer to salsa, danced all over Brazil and now popular across Europe.
    • Live Brazilian music performances.
    • Food – feijoada, a traditional Brazilian black bean and pork stew, £7.50.
    • Venue: The Bridge, Union Southampton, Highfield Campus, SO17 1BJ.
    • Price: £3 Southampton Uni students / £5 non-students (free with Zum weekend package).

SUNDAY 14th MAY

  • 10am-12pm: Recovery Breakfast
    • Join us for coffee, tea and croissants to prepare for the last day of the festival!
    • Venue: The Café, Union Southampton, Highfield Campus, SO17 1BJ.
  • 12pm-6pm: Capoeira, music and dance workshops. Full programme below, workshops include:
    • 12-1pm: CAPOEIRA FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS – all welcome.
    • 1-2pm: Frevo dance workshop – all welcome.
    • 4-5.30pm: Final Capoeira rodas.
    • Venue: Union Southampton (various rooms: The Café, Activities Studio and Meeting Room 2), Highfield Campus, SO17 1BJ.
    • Individual workshop price: Southampton Uni students £5; non-students £10.

***WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS***
We have an amazing range of workshops at this year’s Zum Zum Zum…as an Afro-Brazilian Festival, there’s more than just Capoeira!

  • Capoeira: An Afro-Brazilian art form that blends martial arts, dance and music to form a flowing and acrobatic game. We have workshops for complete beginners so come and have a go! With many amazing Mestres, Contra-Mestres and Professores, from different groups and styles, the performances will be amazing to watch, and there will be plenty of new things to learn for even the most experienced capoeiristas.
  • Maracatú: A carnival dance and percussion from north-east Brazil, which celebrates the crowning of the symbolic King and Queen of Congo.
  • Côco: A typical dance from the coastal regions of north-east Brazil, with a strong African drumming influence.
  • Frevo: An energetic dance with high jumps and using colourful small umbrellas, from Pernambuco in north-east Brazil.
  • Forró: A partner dance ‘for all’, danced all over Brazil and now popular across Europe.
  • Samba de roda: The traditional form of the famous Brazilian carnival samba, with plenty of hip-wiggling and a syncopated beat.
  • Music, percussion and singing workshops with various Mestres.

All weekend package: £75 / £70 before 1 May, (inc. t-shirt, party & recovery breakfast).
Daily prices: Friday £10; Saturday £45; Sunday £35 (inc. recovery breakfast).
Southampton University Students – £50 all weekend; £30 Saturday; £25 Sunday.
Individual workshop: £5 Southampton university students / £10 non-students
Groups of 4 or more people, from outside the UK – £65 each, before 1 May.

***ACCOMMODATION***
We have some spaces available, but accommodation is difficult this year. We will do our best as always, but if you want to guarantee a comfy place to sleep, please look into booking a local BnB/airbnb etc. Use the university postcode SO17 1BJ to look for something nearby, but remember there are regular buses from the centre of town to the University. Any spaces we have will go as first priority to people who pay in advance and who let us know they need a place!
