Mestre Joãozinho da Figueira

On Friday 17th June, we are organising a special roda to help fundraise for ‘Movement for Change: The Capoeiragem Conference 2011′, when Mestre Joao Grande and Mestre Gato from Senzala will be with us in London.

This Friday, we will have the special presence of Mestre Carlao from Kabula and Dr Mariana Candido. Dr Mariana Candido is a lecturer at Princeton University and a  specialist of Angolan history. Her research – soon to be launched as a book by Cambridge University Press – deals with local society and the slave trade from Benguela, which was, together with Luanda, the main port exporting enslaved Africans who became known in Brazil and elsewhere as “Angolas”. Many people also believe that capoeira is based on combat games from the Benguela region.

She will discuss her research and answer any questions over a cup of caldo de feijao at the end of the roda.

Everybody is welcome and we hope to see you there.

Time: 7-10pm
Location: Gibbs Green Tenants Hall, West Kensington, London W14 9NN (see map)
Price: contribution
